The Minisink Valley Warriors opened the 2006 season under new head coach Kevin Gallagher in fine fashion with a 12-0 shutout over the host Wallkill Panthers Friday night. Senior Joe Myhren had a monster day on both sides of the ball.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first quarter as defenses were the name of the game. Late in the second quarter with just over two minutes remaining till halftime, Minisink Valley quarterback Nick Iannuzzi hit Myhren with a pass on a fourth and six, Myhern hauled in the toss at the 23 yard line and dodged would-be tacklers converting the play into a 43 yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked and the Warriors took a 6-0 lead into the break.
Minisink received the second half kickoff but failed to put the ball over the goal line.
On the ensuing possession Wallkill looked as if they were putting together a drive only to see it come to an end with a Joe Myhren interception.
As the third quarter ticked away Wallkill was on another drive when Myhren did it again. This time picking off an errant Wallkill pass and returned it 20 yards for a score. Minisink attempted a two point conversion but were unsuccessful making the score 12-0.
The two teams battled through a scoreless fourth quarter and the final score read 12-0 for the Warriors.
"I'm really happy with the win," said first year head coach Kevin Gallagher. "the guys played well tonight. It's a big win for them. I'm very proud of the team. They work hard and now  they see hard work pays off."
The Warriors were very tough on the defensive side of the ball as well. Led by lineman Adam Ismaiel with 7 tackles and two sacks and middle linebacker Nick Scarpulla who finished with 6 tackles and 1 sack, the Warrior defense limited Wallkill to just 4 first downs.
Senior Nick Emanuelle had a big day as well finishing with 4 tackles and 1 sack and Rob Doller had 3 tackles and one sack.
Myhren finished the game with 3 catches for 85 yards while rushing for 81 yards on 24 carries. The senior safety also had 6 tackles and two interceptions.
Junior quarterback Nick Iannuzzi showed some tremendous athletic ability as well as leadership skills running and throwing the ball well as well as scrambling and getting rid of the ball to avoid sacks and losses of yardage.
Iannuzzi also handles the punting chores for the Warriors and at one point in the game, as the snap sailed over his head Iannuzzi kept his composure, picked up the ball and got off a successful punt. A different outcome on that play could have been a disaster.
The Warrior see action next Saturday as they take their 1-0 record to Washingtonville to take on the Wizards in an important Section 9 Class AA divisional contest. The game is scheduled for Saturday with a 1:30pm kickoff.
