Malunat and Conklin are two reasons for the high hopes for the
upcoming season in Warrior Football-land
Not many people gave the Minisink Valley Warriors much of a chance in Friday
night's game against the Goldbacks of Newburgh. That has all changed now.
The Warriors controlled the game from the opening snap as their crushing defense
held Newburgh at bay and kept the Goldbacks struggling for yards. Newburgh took
the opening kickoff and got virtually nowhere as the Warrior defense dished out
some vicious hits.
The punishing hits by the Warriors set the tempo early and it was just a matter
of time until the Nick Iannuzzi led offense would capitalize.
Senior DB Matt Hannon would give that chance late in the first quarter with his
first interception of the season. Hannon picked the ball off near midfield and
returned it to the NFA 38 yard line. Iannuzzi then hit wideout Jesse Vavricka
with a toss that nearly made it to paydirt. Warrior RB HR Rotolo then punched
the ball in from the one to give the Warriors the lead 6-3.
The Warriors carried the 6-3 lead into halftime.
The second half was an exciting one as the Warriors, on a drive deep into
Newburgh territory, gave the ball up and Newburgh raced the length of the field
to take the lead on a 93 yard fumble return.
A play like that can often times be a game turning event. Many teams would get
down and put it in the tank so to speak. Not these Warriors however. Minisink
Valley answered with a drive on the ensuing kickoff culminated on a 63 yard
gallop by junior RB James Ferrier.
Ferrier took an inside handoff from Iannuzzi, broke through the left side of the
line and sprinted down the sideline outrunning the Goldback defense for the
second Warrior touchdown of the evening. Anthony Puglisi was good on the point
after and Minisink regained the lead 13-10.
The Warrior defense would remain a stonewall the rest of the way onto the season
opening victory.
"I'm very proud of the guys" said Warrior head coach Kevin Gallagher. "They
played extremely well tonight. They showed a lot of poise and determination
after the fumble return and answered with a score of our own. The defense played
a tremendous game as well Jesse Vavricka and James Brain played great games as
did Matt Hannon and Nick Ospina. Adam Ismaeil also had a big game for us."
Minisink finished with 335 yards total offense while allowing just 126 yards.
The Warriors see action Friday when the take to the highway and head to Albany,
NY where they take on LaSalle Institute of Section II. LaSalle won their season
opener this weekend defeating Niskayuna 42-22.
Offensively for the Warriors QB Nick Iannuzzi finished 5-10 for 94 yards through
the air while running the ball 9 times for 71 yards.
James Ferrier toted the rock 8 times for 97 yards and one TD while running mate
HR Rotolo ran 6 times for 42 yards and one score.
Jesse Vavrick hauled in 4 passes for 85 yards. Ferrier also had a reception good
for three yards.
